Monthly Meetings

Central Texas Scale Modelers Society meets on the third Thursday of every month from 7:00-9:00 pm in Founders Hall (Main building) on the campus of Texas A&M Central Texas, at 1001 Leadership Plaza, Killeen, TX 76549. The room in which we meet may vary, depending on the school schedule, but a quick check with the security desk in the 1st floor lobby will get you going in the right direction. Both elevators and stairs will give you access to all floors.  Members and visitors should park in a visitor's parking space, there are plenty in both parking lots. Returning new members should ask for a CTSMS Visitor’s Parking Placard. As a chapter of the International Plastic Modelers Society, some of each meeting must be dedicated to business. However, the business portion of the meeting is kept as short as possible. Our main focus is enjoying the hobby we share! As such, the meetings are only formal to the extent necessary to take care of club-related business and transition to the "show-and-tell" portion of the meeting as quickly as possible.

During show-and-tell time, members and visitors have an opportunity to show off their latest modeling project or some new tool, reference book, kit, etc. Ample time is given to ask questions and discuss the subject.

After a short break, we transition into demo/presentation time. During this period, members volunteer to demonstrate various modeling techniques or give presentations on modeling references, etc. Demos have included building techniques and processes, panel line re-scribing, scratch building, lighting/animation, painting, decal application, and weathering, among other subjects.

Monthly Build Days

In addition to our regular meetings, Central Texas Scale Modelers Society holds monthly "Build Days" from noon-10pm, on the third Saturday of each month in the family life center of Trinity Lutheran Church at 518 East Hwy 190 in Copperas Cove, TX.  Build days are opportunities for members and visitors to bring their current modeling projects into a fun atmosphere to enjoy a day of modeling building. Great fun is had working on models, eating pizza, and watching classic movies, documentaries, and how-to videos while enjoying the company of other modelers.

Other events

ANNUAL AUCTION:

At the July meeting, we hold our annual model auction. This event raises our annual operating funds, allowing us the flexibility to not have a regular dues structure. It's also a great opportunity to find the next modeling project at a great price! In the past, funds have been used to help pay the utilities at our build day location, buy food and refreshments for our parties, and even buy models for members participating in our bi-annual intra-club contests.

BI-ANNUAL CONTEST:

Twice each year, in June and December, we hold an intra-club contest. First, second, and third place overall winners are awarded gift certificates to the local hobby shop (The Hobby Center of Killeen). At the end of each contest, the theme for the next contest is decided. Themes in the past have included: "Single Engine Jet - 1946 to present", "Any Armor Subject", "Anything Russian", "Figure model larger than 54mm", and "Cold War Armor". We have also done group builds of Eduard 1/48th WWI subjects as well as the excellent Tamiya 1/48th scale P-51 Mustang series." All members are eligible to participate and have six months to complete the model for the next contest. These small contests help members who want to learn what it takes to compete at a larger IPMS contest and what judges look for in contest-grade models. It also helps those members wanting to learn how to judge a contest. The primary goal, though, is camaraderie.

CHRISTMAS PARTY:

Finally, the year wraps up with the December meeting, which is also our annual Christmas party. This meeting is held at Trinity Lutheran Church in the same location as our build days. Every Christmas, we celebrate with a pot-luck supper and a spirited (but good-natured) "white-elephant" gift exchange (http://www.bhg.com/christmas/games/white-elephant-christmas-game/). Newcomers are always welcome and are encouraged to bring a dish and a model-related gift to contribute to the exchange.
